Creating Connections West Midlands is a Royal Society event bringing together industry, research and policy to explore collaboration, innovation and how research is translated into practical impact.

The event is structured around themed streams, with parallel sessions designed for specific audiences and areas of interest.

Industry Stream

For industry professionals and SMEs interested in collaboration, innovation and business growth. This stream focuses on practical opportunities to work with academia, including Royal Society schemes supporting industry–research collaboration and commercialisation. It also highlights regional organisations that support R&D and innovation, alongside funding available to businesses at different stages of growth.

For PhD students, postdocs and early career researchers looking to publish their work and navigate the publishing process. This interactive workshop offers practical guidance on choosing the right journal, preparing manuscripts and understanding the publishing process, alongside key topics such as open science, AI in publishing and increasing the visibility of your research.

Public Engagement Stream

For professionals working in public engagement, outreach and community engagement. This interactive workshop focuses on building connections, sharing practice and exploring how the Royal Society can support engagement activities. The afternoon includes joint discussion with educators on effective engagement with schools and communities.

For primary and secondary science teachers, technicians and school leaders. This workshop focuses on practical approaches to delivering science in the classroom, including access to Royal Society programmes, funding opportunities and teaching resources. For policymakers, researchers and industry experts working in clean technology and environmental innovation. This workshop explores how emerging technologies can improve air quality in the West Midlands, bringing together perspectives to assess feasibility, risks and opportunities, and inform future policy and strategy.
